Very interesting analysis, particularly the cultural implications. I love stories like this one which show how travel and cultural trends can have such a big impact on the music we hear.

Thanks Andy. I love to research and write this kind of stuff.

Fascinating article! I’m certainly no student of dance music but it’s always been interesting to me, particularly in the 80s and 90s, how different dance music was in Europe vs the U.S.

Also, I only knew one of all the tracks you mentioned, 1985’s Tarzan Boy, which came back home to Bermuda with me as a musical souvenir from a trip to the UK that summer, which proves your point!

Noticeable how Britain sticks out like a sore thumb on that Schengen map! Voyage Voyage was remixed for the UK by PWL (Pete Waterman and Pete Hammond) and reissued in 1988 when it reached number 5 (the original release stalled outside the Top 50). John is indeed another excellent track and I can also recommend Dis Pourquoi (however, that 2016 remix of Voyage Voyage is awful). Ivana Spagna has a cheesy reputation here in the UK but has been responsible for some superbly crafted pop tracks in her time and has also recorded under a bunch of aliases. Rise Up For Your Love by "Yvonne Kay" is one of my favourites

😃 I did not know "Dis Pourquoi". Listened to it this morning. You are right. It's a great song. Spagna had a cheesy reputation in Belgium as well 😃 I knew she did some stuff under aliases but I did not yet dive into that story. Thanks for sharing Paul. And if you love this repertoire, be sure to give the mix on mixcloud or Soundcloud a spin. Have a great weekend !
