Two Tons O’Fun is a name that might not ring a bell immediately, but if I say “aka The Weather Girls” then you’ll probably hear a complete orchestra of bells. Izora Armstead and Martha Wash, the powerhouse duo behind the LGBTQ+ anthem “It’s Raining Men”, are two of the most talented vocalists in dance music history. Their voices have not only defined “It’s Raining Men” but have also left an indelible mark on numerous dance tracks since the late '70s.
Their journey began as the dynamic backup vocalists for the groundbreaking artist Sylvester, who famously said, “I wanted some big bitches that could wail”—and they certainly delivered. Fans were captivated by their powerful performances on hits like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)." Recognizing their potential, producer Harvey Fuqua and Sylvester’s record label, Fantasy, signed them in 1979 to record under the name Two Tons O’ Fun.
Their debut album (the iconic cover pictured here) soared on the Billboard Dance charts, nearly reaching #1. With standout singles like “I Got The Feeling,” “Do You Wanna Boogie, Huh?” and this week’s Disco Mix Monday feature on Mixcloud, “Earth Can Be Just Like Heaven,” the album became a classic. “Earth Can Be Just Like Heaven” stands out with its uplifting message of unity and love—a heartfelt theme rooted in the Black tradition of moral storytelling, a sentiment that feels especially timely in today’s world.
Two Tons O' Fun may have evolved into The Weather Girls, but their influence in dance music and LGBTQ+ culture remains as vibrant as ever.
